Fall is the best time to fix your Volvo Penta outdrive. At a minimum, your drive needs to be winterized before the first hard freeze. And winterization is exactly when drive problems show up: milky gear lube, a torn bellows, a drive that clunks when you shift.
Find it now and you have all winter to get it fixed. Ignore it and you’ll be fighting the spring rush for a shop appointment while everyone else is launching.
What We Find on Volvo Drives Every Fall
These are the warning signs we see most often when a Volvo drive comes in for winterization:
- Milky or creamy gear lube. Water is getting past a seal. Left in the drive over the winter, that water can freeze and crack the housing.
- Water in the boat, or cracked bellows. The rubber boots between the transom and the drive keep water out of the boat. Once they crack, they leak, and you start finding water in the bilge.
- Metal on the drain plug magnet. A little fuzz is normal. Chunks or flakes mean gears or bearings are wearing.
- Hard shifting, clunking, or slipping. Often a shift mechanism or clutch problem that gets worse, not better.
- Vibration or noise when turning or trimming up. Often worn U-joints or a gimbal bearing on its way out.
- Prop damage or a bent shaft from a summer of stumps, rocks, and sandbars.
If any of these sound familiar, have it checked while the boat is already in for winterization.
