Twin Mercury Outboards at the Kansas City Zoo
This weekend, our family enjoyed a rare and perfect combination: a free Sunday afternoon and beautiful weather. We decided to make the most of it by heading to the Kansas City Zoo to explore their new polar bear exhibit. What we didn’t anticipate was an unexpected connection to our passion for boating!
- Ensure you have all the required tools and supplies on hand.
- Watch the video tutorial above for a detailed walkthrough.

A Polar Bear Feeding Adventure
The timing couldn’t have been better. Upon arriving, we made it just in time for the afternoon polar bear feeding. Watching the majestic bear eat and swim was an incredible experience for both the kids and us adults. It’s not every day you get to see such a powerful creature up close.
Discovering the Twin Mercury Outboards
After the polar bear exhibit, we ventured into the Africa area of the zoo, where visitors can typically enjoy boat rides through a serene lagoon designed to mimic the African countryside.
As we approached the dock, something caught my eye—a pair of twin 9.9-horsepower Mercury outboard motors that looked all too familiar. These engines were sold to the zoo by US Boatworks a few years ago, and it was satisfying to see them still in excellent condition.
The Boats and Their Future
Unfortunately, the lagoon rides were closed during our visit, so we missed the chance to experience the scenic journey through “Africa.” However, spotting those reliable Mercury outboards brought a smile to my face. With their durability and performance, I’m confident those motors will serve the zoo for years to come.
A Unique Connection
This visit to the Kansas City Zoo turned out to be a delightful blend of family fun and a reminder of the enduring quality of Mercury outboard motors. Whether it’s powering zoo boats or your personal adventures, Mercury engines prove their reliability time and time again.
Next time you’re at the Kansas City Zoo, don’t miss the opportunity to check out the Africa area and maybe even spot the twin Mercs in action!
