As we continue the series of tuning up your boat for the season, I will briefly touch on what to do when your boat motor is older.  Often times as your boat gets older, it is very difficult to find parts for your motor.  Manufacturers stop making replacement parts for older motors and suddenly the part you need is NLA, no longer available.  Most boat dealers get rid of older boat parts because they simply do not have the time or the storage space to warehouse hundreds of thousands of boat parts.  They also do not usually have a dedicated parts department to help you find the part you are looking for.  Obsolete boat parts are hard to come by but there are dealers in the US that hang on to older parts.  US Boatworks specializes in hard to find boat parts.  We have three full time dedicated staff members that personally handle all parts coming in and out of our doors.  Tim, Ron and Mike are very knowledgable with most boat motor manufacturers and are happy to help you find the part you are looking for.  We stock Mercury, Mercruiser, OMC, Johnson, Evinrude, Mariner and Volvo parts from the 1950s to present day.  Call us today at 913-342-0011 or send an email to parts@boatengine.com

Sprint boat maintenance - part 2

So we got you thinking about tuning up your boat motor this spring before you take it out for the first time.  Our last article focused on carb kits that are essential in tuning up your boat engine if you need a carb overhaul.  Today, we look to gear lube, another essential component of the boat motor tune up.  For the Evinrude Johnson outboard motor, we carry 78749 HPF XR and 778775 HPF PRO.  Both these popular gear lubes and several others manufactured by Evinrude Johnson, BRP, are recommended for your Evinrude Johnson outboard motor.  Should you need gear lube or even a carb kit to get your spring tune up started, come down or call us.  We ship our boat parts all over the US.

While most retailers fearful that the end of the holiday rush means the end of their busy season, we are just getting ready for our busy time.  It's nice and quiet for a short time at US Boatworks while most customers turn their attention to indoor activities and holiday parties.  But we are gearing up for our spring surge.  As soon as the smoke clears from the Christmas and New Years holidays, we see boat part sales start to steadily increase.  Do-it-yourselfers that repair their own boat motors may have their boat in the garage so they can do the repairs despite the cold.  These DIY boat repair people really step up their efforts in January and February so they can be out fishing come early March.  Our parts department is stocked and ready to ship any boat part you need.

The 2009 boating season is over for most of the country.  The end of the season leaves our showroom looking a little sparse.  Our Mercury outboard motors sold like hotcakes, we actually have none on the floor right now.  In the next few weeks, our 2010 Mercury Motors will be here so stay tuned.  We turned the Mercury motor parts over quickly this year too. 

Our Evinrude Outboard Motors for 2009 moved pretty quick as well but we do have a few models left.  Our larger horse power motors, 115 horse, 90 horse and 50 horse are still in stock.  The cool thing about the Evinrude Motors this year is that you receive a FREE 5 year extended warranty if you purchase the motor before December 22, 2009.  That is an additional 3 year warranty over the normal 2 year Evinrude warranty.  The E-Tec is a fantastic motor that requires little maintenance and lots of fun.  If you need parts for your Evinrude motor or even for a Johnson, look no further.  We stock outboard motor parts for Johnson and Evinrude from the 1950's to present day.  You can choose from used or new parts to fit your budget.

We buy old boat parts and salvage marine inventory

Many marine dealers sell off their older boat part inventory at the end of the season.  Often times dealers will be going out of business or just need some cash in the winter months, this is a great time for us to buy.  US Boatworks buys surplus inventory from marine and boat dealers throughout the year. 

We are always looking for used lower unit cores from Mercury, Evinrude, Johnson, Mercruiser, OMC and Volvo.  Salvage marine gearcases are something we almost will always purchase from a dealer.  Last year we were able to buy about 50 lower unit cores from a dealer.  This was great timing as during the winter months we rebuild the gearcases so they are ready for sale in the spring when our customers need them.  US Boatworks is a major supplier of remanufactured lower units and new marine gearcases.  We constantly are turning our inventory so new items are always needed.

25 Year Anniversary

2009 is US Boatworks' 25 year anniversary.  Back in 1984, Marty started US Boatworks from his garage.  His idea was to improve on the service boat dealers offer. 

First, boat dealers do not offer the option for using used parts in their repairs.  US Boatworks specializes in used, salvage boat parts for your marine needs.  The parts are inspected to insure they are in good shape.  They also always come from fresh water engines, so there is no worry about salt water corrosion.  We sell and ship these parts all over the country so feel free to ask about purchasing used parts for your boat motor.

Secondly, boat dealers have a minimal inventory of boat parts on hand.  What this means for you is two fold.  One, you wait for the dealer to order your parts to fix your motor which can add days or even weeks to your repair turn around.  And two, manufacturers stop making parts for their engines after a certain number of years.  If that is the case, you are out of luck getting that part from your dealer.  US Boatworks has over 25,000 different boat engine parts in stock that means faster turn around time on your repair.  It also means you can ask about almost any Evinrude, Johnson, Mercury, Mercruiser, Volvo-Penta marine part and odds are that we have it in stock for you.

Time to Winterize

Unless you are a die hard fisher, its probably time to get your outboard or sterndrive motor winterized.  Those of you in the Mid-West had better act fast as the Mid-West is expecting a hard freeze in the next few days.  

So what are your options? 1) You can do it yourself or   2) you can take your boat in for service.  Here are a few tips for you.

1) Have US Boatworks Winterize your boat for you:

watch out for that tree!

The fall fishing season is upon us. I was out at our new Lake Lenexa yesterday and saw plenty of kids catching fish. What a great time they were having in the cool fall evening. While you can only have trolling motors on Lake Lenexa, watching the smaller fishing boats got me to thinking about posting some fishing tips on this blog. I may start the forum so people can chime in on fishing tips.

The biggest fishing tip that I can come up with... If you are fishing in a man made -dam lake, try fishing by the tree stumps. Fish love to hang out around old stumps and logs. In fact, when they made Lake Lenexa they purposely left stumps, logs and plastic tubes for the marine life. Great for the fish, great for the fisher, not so great for your outboard motor. Hitting one of these stumps can cause damage to your propeller. That damage is obvious and not too terribly expensive to fix.

What if you damage your outdrive? Damage to your lower unit you can get into some costly repairs. Do your homework before making a decision on what to do. Here is some advice:

First: Be aware that your insurance policy should kick in to repair the outdrive after you fulfill the deductible. US Boatworks works with many insurance companies and will fight to get your outdrive repaired properly. You can feel comfortable knowing that the owner personally will see the job through to the end and will personally talk with the claims adjuster so that all expenses are understood by the adjuster.  This helps you get a fair reimbursement.

Monday, busy Monday

They tell me that after Labor Day, the boaters are putting up their boats for the season, but that is not the case this year.  Our boat parts are flying off the shelves.  Customers are still coming in from all over Kansas and Missouri boat repair.  This past weekend the boaters were out on the Kansas area lakes because of the sunny warm weather on Sunday.
